Most of the housing stock in this service area went up between 1980 and 2007, with a median build year around 1986. That matters for cables because doors from that era were built with galvanized steel lift cables and factory lubrication that was never meant to last forty summers in a HEAT-severe climate. Tucson's sustained high temperatures cook the factory grease out of the cable strands faster than in milder climates, and dry strands wear against the drum and pulley instead of riding smoothly over them. Add daily heat cycling - the door track and cable expanding and contracting through 100-plus degree afternoons and cooler nights - and you get metal fatigue at the same points on nearly every door of that vintage. It's not one bad batch of cable. It's forty years of heat doing what heat does to steel. Homes built more recently, closer to 2007, tend to have galvanized or vinyl-coated cable that holds up a little longer, but even those aren't immune once they cross the fifteen-year mark in this climate.
